Are UK pet owners starting to treat pet care like a utility, not a luxury?
The UK pet market keeps growing, but the real story may be changing behaviour.
Yes, millions of people still see pets as family.
But the latest numbers suggest pet care is becoming something else too: a serious budget line.
The UK has 17.2 million pet-owning households. PDSA’s latest estimates put the country at 11.1 million dogs and 10.5 million cats. Pet food alone is worth £4.1bn, while vet and related services add roughly £6.3bn.
At the same time, 4.6 million pet owners now have insurance, and claims hit £1.23bn. Meanwhile, the CMA says vet prices rose 63% between 2016 and 2023.
That feels like a turning point.
The category is still emotional. But it’s also becoming more rational.
People are asking harder questions:
- Is this worth the price?
- Can I trust this brand?
- What am I actually paying for?
- Where is the real value?
The next winners in pet may not be the brands that shout the loudest.
They may be the ones that make pet owners feel informed, protected and respected.
What do you think — is pet spending in the UK becoming more value-driven than passion-driven?
