COMPOSITION CHARACTERISTICS AND RATIONALE
SPECIFIC™ CKD Heart & Kidney Support is uniquely high in EPA and DHA omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil. In dogs with heart failure, EPA helps maintain muscle mass and appetite, normal heart rhythm, blood pressure, and platelet aggregation. In dogs with kidney failure, omega-3 fatty acids help delay the progression of kidney failure.
Patients with heart failure have decreased sodium output as a response to the reduced cardiac output, resulting in sodium and water retention. The low sodium content helps to break the closed loop of fluid exchange (hypertension and edema). This is extremely important for patients with kidney and liver failure, as well as for heart failure.

Phosphorus restriction is necessary to prevent hyperphosphatemia and stop the progression of renal failure.
The reduced protein content with its high biological value reduces azotemia in dogs with renal insufficiency. Reduces the risk of hyperammonemia and hepatic encephalopathy in dogs with renal insufficiency. Proteins with high biological value fully supply the dog's body with amino acids.

The limited protein content reduces the content of oxalates, cysteines and urates in the urine. Together with the alkaline pH of the urine, this prevents the formation of calcium oxalate crystals, urates and cysteines in the urine and helps maintain urinary tract health. The risk of calcium oxalate formation is also reduced thanks to the potassium citrate present in the feed.
