MONGE VETSOLUTION FELINE HEPATIC contains silibinin, one of the active compounds in milk thistle, which has various beneficial effects on liver function.

In hepatocytes, silibinin scavenges free radicals, inhibiting lipid peroxidation, helping to fight inflammation and fibrosis. The anti-inflammatory properties of silibinin are attributed to DNA/RNA-mediated effects at the cellular nucleus level. Its primary impact is on liver fibrosis by converting hepatic stellate cells into myofibroblasts, which is inhibited by silibinin, halting cell contact. Silibinin reduces stellate cell DNA synthesis, proliferation, and migration, and limits the formation of fibrous tissue. It also restricts other toxins from entering hepatocytes due to membrane polypeptides that bind bile salts.

Recent studies on the pharmacokinetics of the silibinin-phosphatidylcholine complex in cats have shown an increase in oral bioavailability of about 7%, partly due to the species-specific limited glucuronidation capacity. Silibinin promotes enterohepatic recirculation, and bile concentration is almost 100 times higher compared to serum levels.
