The goal of prevention is to reduce calcium oxalate by lowering calcium and oxalate concentrations while increasing urine volume to dilute minerals and maintain an alkaline urine pH.

Since antioxidant therapy protects against calcium oxalate precipitation in the kidneys and reduces oxalate excretion in animals prone to stone formation, the accumulation of calcium oxalate crystals in stones is prevented by free radical scavengers, protecting the membrane from damage caused by free radicals.

Higher calcium concentration in the gut (0.6 – 1.5%) promotes complexation between calcium and oxalate, reducing their absorption in the intestines and excretion via the kidneys, thereby decreasing the risk of calcium oxalate or other calcium-containing crystals or stones.
