When applied in a moist environment (wound), the enzyme glucoloxidase in honey ensures a small but sustained release of low concentrations of hydrogen peroxide. The hydrogen peroxide cleanses the skin or wound and stimulates healing.
The low pH level maintains an environment conducive to healing and restores the skin's natural pH level.
The antioxidants in the honey soften the skin, the essential oils enhance the effectiveness of the honey, and it repels insects and prevents the wound from being licked (the ointment has an unpleasant taste for animals).
